Vertebrates are members of the phylum Chordata. Chordates have four common characteristics:
1. Chordates have a hollow nerve cord that runs along the dorsal (back) side of their body.
2. During development, chordates have a flexible rod, the notochord, just ventral to the nerve cord.
• In most adult chordates (vertebrates), vertebrae replace the notochord.
3. Pharyngeal clefts appear during development and become gill slits in fish. In land chordates, they become part of the ear, head, and neck.

4. A post-anal tail. It is lost during development in humans and many other species.
